Gramsy Glimpses: Selective Hearing Rears its Head at 18 Months!

August 30, 2016 by Valerie Lugonja 2 Comments

Bark, Vanja! Bark

Gramsy Glimpses Lauren Aaron and William

Yesterday, Lauren called and we were just finishing our morning coffee about to get moving for the day. Perfect timing. William was playing in his bedroom after breakfast and we were chatting and enjoying watching him talk to himself and investigate his space. He would come to the screen for a visit, play, come back…. and then became engrossed in his play.

When it was time for Gramsy and Deda to say “Bye-bye”, Gramsy said, “William!” …he didn’t even budge.  “William!”  ….usually, he turns to look. “”William!” …nope. Not a flicker of movement.

“William! William! It’s Gramsy! Come see Gramsy.”

Nothing.

Convinced he was paying no attention to anything being said, Gramsy said, “William, William, come and see the little puppy!”

Immediately, he dropped the book, turned around and scrambled over to his mom’s knee, pulling on her ipad to see the little puppy.

Now, Gramsy often babysits Great Grandma’s little puppy, but not on this day.

“Oh, is Penny there?” Lauren asks as William starts to climb up to get a better angle.

“No… I thought he wasn’t listening.” I mumbled, full of shame.

“Mom!” She was laughing, but still shocked that Gramsy would pull such a stunt.

Gramsy immediately turned her camera onto Vanja, innocently reading his paper, chuckling and shaking his head at Gramsy’s desperate attempt at her grandson’s attention.

“Bark, Vanja! Bark!”

He looks up, blinded by the words. “Bark, Vanja! Bark!”

Camera on Deda, William anxiously peering into the screen, Deda stands up on cue, barks in the cutest little yelping way, pants and grins at William.

William grins, then runs back to his play.

Lauren and William say “Bye-bye”.

Gramsy buries her head in her hands, avoiding Deda’s eye and sheepishly shrinks deeper into her chair.

“Bark, Vanja! Bark!” what was I thinking? Well, Deda never lets any of us down. Ever.

Gramsy Glimpses is a project started in August 2016 to capture vignettes of hilarity or endearment as our precious Prince William makes sense of his world.  Background information about the “characters”, “setting” and a list of all Gramsy Glimpses can be found here.
